Giving the blog thing a go.

It’s official, I have a blog and I have no idea how to use it.

Well, here we go. I have decided to add a bit of a blog to the site, mainly to keep everyone who is interested informed about what we do, why we do it, our products and the occasional glimpse into our everyday life.

Our life seems to revolve around our work, especially as we are a relatively young business, everything we do is in the interest of growing our business. So as an annoying result of this, we(which usually means me, and not the better half or the kids) are constantly looking out for anything electrical, refrigeration or cctv related. And it is surprising how many things can be found when one looks for them.

So, for an quick and simple introduction.

What do we do?

We do anything that is electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning or cctv/alarm related. And we try and keep up to date with all the latest technologies, products, methods and ideas that are out there. This is hopefully so we can provide our clients with the best possible solutions available at the time, while also allowing for ease of change in the future.

Why do we do it?

Because we enjoy this type of work. That is basically it. And I n the process of enjoying what we do, we can hopefully pass this on to our clients by the services we provide to them and our products and solutions. We, (and again this mainly means me),  really enjoy all the things that are available in these areas, and the fact that it is a constantly changing and evolving couple of industries. One  minute we can be working on very old and dangerous VIR cable , and bringing it up to current standards with a rewire. And then we can be working on automation controls or plc's . We want to be able to pass this technology and ideas on to others, this is why we do what we do, and also why we enjoy it. This will be expanded on in future blogs.

Our products?

We will only use tried and tested products. And ones that we trust and would(and do) use in our own home and business. This goes for all our products, we won't use anything that is unsafe, doesn't meet Australian standards, is untested and things that are just plain dodgy.  We can supply a range of products and items for any sort of requirement.

Us?

Sometimes there will be a bit of an off track digression that will include things about where we've been, what has happened and about to happen, and just general possibly irrelevant things that are going on in our lives. Just so everyone can see the personal side to what is otherwise just some words and pictures on a screen. Don't worry, these should be short and not too annoying!!

Thank you for putting up with this head first dive into a blogging attempt, and stay tuned for our next blog, (which should be at least one a week)

There is an awful lot of electrical contractors out there all offering 50 different services and areas that the cover(well maybe not 50, but it is generally a lot) and we feel that that is not always in the best interest of YOU, the most important part of the equation. Whilst it may seem like a good idea and obvious that your electrical contractor should and quite often will do all these things, in practice this is not always the best solution. We feel that the electrical industry is so broad it is very difficult to always be completely up to date and trained up on all the latest rules, requirements and products in these areas. This is why we feel and have come to the conclusion that it is better to specialise in only a few areas, and not just any areas but the ones we are passionate about.  And no, we don't mean specialise like most others advertise like, you will notice a lot of companies have - specialise in Domestic, Commercial and Industrial - on the sides of their vehicles. This is a bit of a misleading claim, as these areas are very broad and therefore it is pretty well impossible to be a specialist in all of them. Which also can affect the pricing of things a lot, but this is best for another week. But just remember, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” – Benjamin Franklin

When we say we specialise in an area, we mean it. Yes we can do other electrical jobs, but it is not our main areas and our passions. By focussing on Automation, CCTV and security/alarm systems, we feel we can deliver the best service to YOU, who, lets never forget, is the reason why we get up each day and do what we do. We aim to give you the best possible result that you deserve for your home, peace of mind and convenience. Also by focussing our efforts on these things, we can get the best training in the products and keep up to date on all the ins and outs of them and how to give you what you want.

When you have to try and find someone to make your ideas work, it can be very hard to find companies that are prepared to listen to you and what you want. Especially when they see you as 'just another job!' and an inconvenience to their day and already out of control list of jobs that cover a very wide area and probably aren't getting the attention that each one of these jobs deserve. We see it all the time in rushed and incomplete jobs and dissatisfied customers out there that are left let down by what they thought should of been a straight forward job.

So to sum it up, Specialising is the way to deliver what you want in the way that you want it, and expect it! With this in mind, it pays to be a bit sceptical of the places that say they can do everything for anyone. Quite often it does not go exactly to plan, where as when you engage a specialist, you should get what you deserve, a completed and fully functional result. So when you need something, seek out the specialists.

This protective device will cut the power to the connected circuits if it detects either too much power being used or any current leakage to earth.

Do I need RCD's in my home?

If you are an existing home and are having any electrical work done then it is probably a good time to upgrade to RCBO (instead of RCD, I will explain why this is a better option later on) protection (and very soon this will be required by the AS3000 standard)

Does my home already have RCD protection?

There is an easy way to check, take a look at your switchboard, if you have a more modern board containing switches as opposed to fuses look for a breaker that has a test button, usually there is a ‘T’ or ‘Test’ printed on the button an should look like the images below.
Pressing this button will cause the RCBO to trip, this shows that the RCBO is working correctly. It will have now cut the power to the circuit it is protecting and only that one circuit.
